Reflexology
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is based on the principle that points on the hands, feet and ears; known as reflex points; correspond to body organs, glands and structures. A map of reflex points on the feet can be found here. Stimulating these points by pressure, stretches and movement promotes relaxation, stress reduction, circulation and nerve conductivity. Reflexology is not a cure and should never replace treatment by a licensed professional. It does, however, promote better health by creating and maintaining a body's natural equilibrium.
History of Reflexology
Reflexology dates back to ancient Egypt, India and Asia. The oldest documented application of reflexology dates back to about 2300BC. Wall paintings at Saqqara in the tomb of Ankhmahor depict the practice of foot and hand reflexology.
Modern reflexology is most often attributed to Dr. William Fitzgerald and Eunice Ingham. For his work in "Zone Therapy," Dr. Fitgerald has become kown as the "Father of Reflexology." He discovered that pressure, when applied to certain points on the body could relieve pain and improve (in most cases) the functionality of body organs. His research led him to divide the body into 10 energy zones, 5 on each side of the body. Until the early 1960's, reflexology was known as "Zone Therapy." In the early 1930's, Eunice Ignham expanded on De. Fitzgerald's work. Through extensive work she found points on the feet (reflexes) mirrored the organs of the body which lead her to write "Stories the Feet Can Tell." She has become known as the "Mother of Reflexology", travelling extensively before her death promoting and spreading this healing modality. Over 300 studies have been conducted studying the effectiveness of reflexology.
